Responsibilities
Martinsville Fire and EMS is a combination agency providing services with a diverse composition of career and volunteer personnel. Fire Chief Dan Howell manages the department with the assistance of a dedicated and professional team of Company and Chief Officers. Martinsville's 11 square miles is covered by two stations consisting of two engine companies, one ladder company, a rescue truck, and two advance life support ambulances.
Fire suppression, advanced life support EMS transport, vehicle rescue, technical rescue, fire inspections, fire investigations, plans review, public education, emergency management, city-wide employee safety, and hazardous materials response services are provided. There are three divisions including Administration, Operations, and Emergency Management and Safety.
The department responds to approximately 3,800 calls per year. Of those, about 85% are medically related, and the remainder are fire related.
Personnel are cross-trained in both fire and EMS. Common certifications include Firefighter I and II, Fire Instructor, Hazardous Materials, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, and many other specialty courses.
