Martinsville Fire Marshal's Office and Police Investigating Fatal Fire
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - The Martinsville Fire Marshal's Office and the Martinsville Police Department are investigating a fire that led to a fatality at 849 Smith St. in the City of Martinsville.
The Martinsville City Fire & EMS department was dispatched to the scene at 5:03 a.m. this morning. The fire was reported by a neighbor.
The first unit arrived on scene at 5:10 a.m. and found a fully-involved fire in the basement with heavy smoke coming from the main level of the house. Three members of the residence had self-evacuated upon the firefighters arrival and reported a fourth victim still in a back bedroom. Firefighters proceeded to extinguish the fire in the basement as another crew began to search for the victim. Firefighters discovered the victim's body in the back right bedroom of the main level and removed the victim as quickly as possible. The victim is Wilhelmina Nadine Philpott, age 47 of 849 Smith St. Surviving the incident are Patricia Martin (sister to decedent), Edward Martin (brother-in-law to decedent), and Ernest Philpott (brother to decedent).
The Martinsville Fire Marshal's Office and the Martinsville Police Department are in the preliminary stages of the investigation and will release relevant details as they become available.
