Former Mustang Player Returns to Martinsville to Take Head Coaching Position

The Martinsville Mustangs announced today that former Mustang player Jason Sherrer has been selected as the head coach for the 2011 season. Sherrer was selected for the position from a pool of highly qualified applicants and officially assumes his duties beginning Friday, October 1, 2010. Sherrer will immediately begin recruitment of players for the upcoming 2011 season.
"I am extremely excited for this opportunity to be back with the Martinsville Mustangs," Jason said. "I once was recruited to play for the Mustangs and now I am doing the recruiting. I am honored to be a part of this organization again and to come back to where my passion for summer baseball started."
Jason is entering his second year as an assistant coach at Mount Olive College; a premier NCAA II competitor in baseball. Sherrer played two years at Scottsdale Community College in Arizona, and during the summer of 2005, Sherrer joined the Mustangs as the starting catcher after the all-star break. Sherrer was also a two year starter for Mount Olive in 2007 and 2008, helping his team to a Conference Championship ('07) and a NCAA II World Series Championship (‘08).
Sherrer brings with him assistant Greg Bordes. Bordes is entering his second season as a player manager for the Arizona State University baseball team. Greg was a three-year letter winner for the Sun Devils and was a member of two College World Series teams (2005, 2007) and two Pac-10 Championship squads (2007, 2008).
The Martinsville Mustangs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 14th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
