Philpott Lake Clean Up Day
September 24, 2011Philpott Lake Clean Up Day Sept 24, 2011
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the non-profit group, Friends of Philpott, will host the annual shoreline clean-up at Philpott Lake on Saturday, September 24, 2011 in celebration of National Public Lands Day from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The Friends of Philpott will serve a hot dog lunch at Twin Ridge Park on the Franklin County side of the lake at the conclusion of the event.
Volunteers of all ages are invited to take part by meeting at one of two gathering points, Philpott Park picnic shelter (near Philpott Lake Visitor Center) on the Henry County side of the lake, and Twin Ridge Park on the Franklin County side. Coordinators will begin signing volunteers up and giving instructions at 8:30 a.m.
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers will hand out trash bags and work gloves provided by the Ocean Conservancy because, according to Philpott Lake Operations Project Manager, Rocky Rockwell, "this year's clean-up is also part of the International Coastal Cleanup Project". Volunteers are asked to dress in appropriate clothing and to wear life jackets.
Volunteers with all types of boats and watercraft are invited to assist with the clean-up. Groups that do not have access to boats are encouraged to pick up litter along the trails that skirt the shoreline. Participants will be able to launch their craft for free on the day of the clean-up and will receive a coupon which is good for one Fee Free day-use visit at any park surrounding the lake. In addition, they will receive a small gift and are invited to the hot dog roast at the conclusion of the clean-up.
Areas will be identified for the clean-up and participants will disburse to launch their boats and head out to the targeted areas. Volunteers may walk the shoreline to pick up litter as the water level dictates on the day of the clean-up. The clean-up will conclude at 12:00 noon and all the bags of trash and debris will be transported to Twin Ridge Park. Once the cleanup is concluded all volunteers will go to the Twin Ridge Park for the hot dog roast and a group picture will be taken, and the volunteers can enjoy a lunch of hotdogs, soda and chips (donations appreciated).
Visitors come to enjoy the unspoiled mountain expanses, serene beauty and it is an outstanding recreational destination. We encourage you to volunteer your time and enjoy this national environmental event. We are excited that this year the event will include dive teams from Franklin, Henry and Patrick Counties as well. The event will be held rain or shine.
