In a continuing effort to improve services, the City of Martinsville has implemented changes in the manner in which after-hours and emergency phone calls are handled.
The City's night/weekend/holiday emergency call number, 403-5138, as well as the daytime Electric Division number, 403-5183, are now programmed with an auto-attendant that allows callers to select options regarding the nature of their call. The new feature will allow more calls to be answered during the day when periods of high volume calls exist for situations such as power outages, storms, and other utility emergencies, and also allows City staff to provide public information through a recorded message regarding a particular emergency or event.
After 5 pm weekly, and on weekends and holidays, calls using the 403-5138 after-hours emergency number are routed to a call center. Callers will have the option in the event of a non-emergency to leave a message that is routed directly to a particular City office (Electric, Public Works, etc.) that will be addressed the next working day, or may speak directly with a call-taker who will then route information regarding the emergency event to a specific on-call City work crew. Callers also continue to have the option of calling City office numbers after hours for non-emergencies since the City's telephone system is equipped with voice mail features.
Other changes and improvements are anticipated in the near future and that information will be provided when available.
