History of Martinsville

Located in southern Virginia in the Eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Martinsville is named for General Joseph Martin, a frontiersman, soldier, and statesman. We are known as a destination with “Deep Roots” where unique assets and rich legacies offer exceptional visitor experiences and high-quality of life for residents. In 1790,  Martinsville was named the county seat of Henry after the western portion of Henry County was broken off to form Patrick County and in 1873, Martinsville was incorporated into a town.

In 1902,  Manufacturing furniture became an important role in the city and region and a staple in Martinsville's local economy. This phase makes significant contributions to our community by employing thousands of skilled craftsmen by area furniture manufacturers. In 1928, Martinsville became a city of the second class and soon after in 1941, became a city of the first class.

The 1980s marked the shift of economic interests, where local industries suffered as a result of industries exiting the United States.

Since then, Martinsville has become a center for innovation and revitalization, focused on diversifying its economy by leveraging its rich history and skilled workforce. With investments in infrastructure and economic/community development, Martinsville is building a strong foundation for future generations.

The city also remains a cultural hub with an established arts scene, local museums, historic sites, and an appreciation for the outdoors, thanks to its location near the Blue Ridge Mountains. Martinsville continues to embrace its heritage while adapting to the evolving needs of the modern world, making it an attractive place for both residents and visitors alike. Whether exploring the history of the area, enjoying outdoor activities, or participating in the city's vibrant cultural life, Martinsville offers something for everyone.
