Environmentalism
Welcome to the City of Martinsville Environmentalism Page!
Our streets and parks are shaded by a lush tree canopy, peaceful lakes and streams wind through the community, and trails invite everyone to walk, run, or bike while enjoying the outdoors. From quiet walks under the trees to adventures along the water, Martinsville’s natural beauty is easy to explore and enjoy every day. The City of Martinsville doesn’t have a dedicated environmental department—but that doesn’t stop us from integrating sustainability into our everyday work. Whether it’s planning, energy use, or urban forestry, environmental considerations are embedded in how the city function. Safeguarding our vibrant tree canopy and valued water resources are our priority.
Sustainable Planning
Our current Comprehensive Plan, running through 2026, ensures that environmental priorities are part of how we shape land use, infrastructure, and preservation. It reflects feedback from residents, businesses, and civic groups and helps guide decisions city-wide.
GMU Climate Action Partnership: Local Impact, Practical Approach
In 2023, Martinsville partnered with George Mason University through the Local Climate Action Planning Initiative (LCAPI) led by the Schar School of Policy and Government.

Growing Our Green Spaces: Tree City USA & Urban Canopy
Martinsville holds a Tree City USA designation, recognizing our investment in urban tree management, conservation, and education.
Through our Community Forest Revitalization Program, in partnership with Green Infrastructure, we've held community workshops, conducted tree giveaways, and established a goal: increase city tree canopy by 1% over 10 years.
These efforts help our city enjoy cleaner air, reduced heat, and a healthier environment.
