On December 23, 2025, the Martinsville Animal Shelter suffered a devastating fire that impacted our community and the animals in its care. The incident was a tragic loss, but it also became a moment that highlighted the strength and compassion of Martinsville’s residents, volunteers, and regional partners. COMMUNITY HONOR STATEMENT IN REMEMBRANCE AND GRATITUDE OF THE MARTINSVILLE ANIMAL SHELTER


The City of Martinsville honors the memory of the December 23, 2025 fire at the Martinsville Animal Shelter and the sense of loss experienced across the community. The incident resulted in the loss of the shelter facility and the deaths of three dogs — Blackie, Max, and Jake. Their passing was felt by shelter staff, volunteers, first responders, partner organizations, and residents who care deeply about animal welfare and the role of public services in our community.

The City of Martinsville expresses gratitude to all who contributed — both publicly and quietly — during the recovery period. In the aftermath of the fire, the Martinsville community responded with notable compassion, generosity, and unity. Individuals, families, businesses, nonprofit organizations, rescue partners, and volunteers stepped forward to provide financial contributions, supplies, professional assistance, and time. 

The City also extends sincere appreciation to regional jurisdictions such as Henry County and the Town of Rocky Mount, along with their leadership, whose support and coordination during the recovery period were invaluable.

The City also expresses heartfelt gratitude to Officer Mabe, whose dedication and service as the Animal Shelter Operator exemplify professionalism, compassion, and commitment to the well-being of the animals and the community. Her efforts, both before and after this incident, have been instrumental in guiding recovery and maintaining care standards.

Through this Honor Statement, the City honors the memory of Blackie, Max, and Jake, and recognizes the individuals, organizations, and regional partners whose support helped guide the City forward.
