A Landmark Preserved

Once a prominent fixture in the city’s skyline, the building had sat underutilized for years. The adaptive reuse project preserves this iconic landmark while giving it a new purpose—bringing vitality and activity back to the heart of downtown.

Affordable Housing & Economic Impact

The residential component will offer 63 apartments, each renting for under $1,000/month, providing much-needed affordable housing. The project is expected to generate $80,000–$100,000 annually in utility revenue for the city, strengthen the local tax base, and draw consistent foot traffic to downtown businesses.

Funding & Support

This $13.5 million project is backed by $2.8 million in state redevelopment grants and $189,500 in Brownfield funding for environmental cleanup. The investment demonstrates strong public-private collaboration and a commitment to revitalizing downtown Martinsville.

Flexible Design & Community Benefits

In addition to apartments, the building will include versatile commercial floors and a rooftop event venue, fostering local business growth and community engagement. The design supports a mix of uses while maintaining accessibility and energy efficiency standards.

Looking Ahead

Once completed, the BB&T building will serve as a catalyst for broader downtown revitalization, encouraging new investments, boosting confidence in the local market, and providing a dynamic, livable space for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
